Physical Activity

Author's Note: I wrote this piece for a gym essay. We had to write about what physical activity provides for us. I worked on A,B transitions.

Working out for 30 minutes at the beginning of the day can change your entire day. When the endorphins are released into your bloodstream during your workout, you feel more energized for the rest of the day. Physical activity is one of the most important activities that you need to do every day to stay fit. It will help you with everything including; social interaction, health, and teamwork. Physical activity provides me with a challenge, enjoyment, and health.

Physical activity provides me with a challenge and enjoyment. People in sports receive a challenge when they play hard each time they play. It is only a challenge if you push yourself to be the best you can be. If you don’t push yourself to be the best athlete possible, it isn’t a challenge and it isn’t an enjoyment. For some people, a challenge in sports is not an enjoyment, but for me it is. I love challenges in sports whether it is in a practice, a gym class, or a game. These activities also provide me with health.

Not only does physical activity provide me with a challenge and enjoyment, it also provides me with health. Without good health, you won’t be able to survive for that long; therefore you need physical activity to maintain excellent health. There are many health benefits from physical activity including maintaining a healthy weight. In order to be healthy you can’t be obese or over weight, so you need to exercise to lose weight and become healthier. I don’t want to be overweight when I grow up so I need to continue doing physical activity until I am too old to do it. Another health benefit from physical activity is reducing the chance of you getting type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. If you don’t exercise, you are more susceptible to diseases, cancers, and type 2 diabetes. I definitely don’t want any of these; therefore I am going to exercise for the rest of my life.

Physical activity should be a must for everyone in the world. It is a must for me so I do it almost every day. It provides me with a challenge, enjoyment, and health. A quote that stands out to me is, “Seven days without exercise makes one weak”. This quote tells me that you need to exercise almost every day to stay healthy. If you don’t, you become weaker and weaker. This quote helps me provide myself with a challenge, enjoyment, and health in physical activity.

Space Technology

Author's Note: I wrote this piece for science. I needed the body paragraphs for a part of the test. In this piece I focused on the introduction and conclusion.

Paint a picture in your mind of yourself traveling in space on your way to Mars. Passing by satellites and the International Space Station. Then you arrive at Mars, wondering what are these rovers? What do the rovers do for us? What do those satellites do for us? Satellites and rovers are the most valuable pieces of space technology that we have.

Satellites are the most valuable pieces of space technology. Satellites help us find planets, like the Kepler Satellite found more than 450 suspected planets outside of our solar system. Satellites have also helped us find out that there are more moons to different planets. In 2005, a satellite found 2 more moons orbiting Pluto. Knowing this, it will help our space exploration since we know that our satellites can find things that are as far away as Pluto. They help us with everyday things such as talking on the phone and navigation. Without a GPS it took people a long time to read a map and direct someone to where they have to go. Without communication, long distance calling wouldn’t exist and it would be all letters. We can now communicate faster and better with satellites.

The Mars Rover is the 2nd most valuable piece of space technology just behind the satellite. It picks up samples on Mars to see if there is/was water on Mars. It can also examine more territory on a surface than almost any other piece of space technology. The Mars rover is helping us discover more about Mars and if humans could sometime live there. It has discovered many things on Mars, two things being sand and water-formed clay minerals. It will definitely help us in our further discoveries because it can also take pictures and videos, that could help us determine if humans can explore it. These discoveries are getting us closer to finding out if we can sustain life on Mars.

If we had to choose two pieces of space technology to help us further our space exploration, we should pick the satellite and the Mar’s Rover. There is no reason why we shouldn’t use these pieces of space technology. They both benefit us in more ways than any other space technology. The Mar’s Rover and satellites are the most important pieces of space technology..

Tebow Time- Revised

Author’s Note: I am editing this piece and putting more figurative language in it. I am also going to add some connections to it.

“The first overtime play from scrimmage in the 2011 AFC Wildcard game between the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tim Tebow has really led the Broncos into this position. With the new overtime rules, if the team that receives the ball first scores on its first possession, then the game is over. Now to start the overtime period,” announced Marv Albert as the crowd was as loud as a band at State Fair. “Tebow drops back for the throw, surveys the left. He throws the ball left. Caught by Demaryius Thomas at the 39 yard line. He could…go…all…the…way! Touchdown Denver Broncos! It was and always will be an unforgettable moment for Tim Tebow and the rest of the team. From a Tebow haters point of view, which is almost everyone,  it was a lucky throw and then Demaryius Thomas did the rest. From people who respect Tebow, it was a throw as perfect as an ice cream sundae on a hot summer day and the Thomas just ran it in. The view about Tebow is much different between Tebow haters and Tebow lovers.

“Haters will be haters.” This quote describes everyone against Tim Tebow. They say he can’t play football and he should never get a job as a quarterback. Tebow haters also say he can’t play quarterback because he can’t throw the ball. As announced on ESPN by a NFL reporter, “he can play running back”, but the Tebow haters add on that he is too slow to play running back. It was suggested by haters on ESPN that his skills haven’t improved since he was a Florida Gator in college. Connecting to the throw made by Tebow in the 2011 AFC Wildcard game, these people think that Tebow threw a pass as brutal as hot chocolate on a summer day and Demaryius made an amazing catch. From a Tebow lovers point of view, this is all false.

Although many people hate Tim Tebow, there are still quite a few people who value him. All his fans in Denver from when he played there and most definitely the Florida Gator fans. In Florida he won two National Championships and won a Heisman Trophy. What more could you ask for? Now in the NFL he is one of the most mobile quarterbacks in the league. When he drops back to throw and nobody is open, he can run and turn nothing into something as special as getting a Shamrock Shake in February. He also runs an option with the running back this is almost impossible to stop. If the defensive man goes for Tebow he gives it to the tailback and vice versa. Tim is also very clutch, going back the 2011 AFC Wildcard game. It was a perfect throw, right into the hands of Demaryius Thomas. It was like a cheetah chasing and grasping onto an antelope. Thomas didn't even have to try, he just put his hands out and the ball spun right into his hands. There are plenty of Tebow haters in the United States but you have to respect him for what he can do on the field.

Hating an unskilled player is something a lot different than disliking a descent player. Exactly the case in which Tim Tebow is in. I think that some of the Tebow haters are as annoying as nails on a chalkboard. But, relating to the 2011 AFC Wildcard game, he threw one of the best passes in NFL history. You have to respect this man! Many quarterbacks wouldn't have been able to make that pass. I could connect to what had happened because I watched the whole situation unfold. Whether you’re a Tebow hater or Tebow lover, treat him with respect on the field.

Letter

Author's Note: I am writing this piece as a letter to a player on Kentucky that recently got injured.  I am working on making connections and scoring a 9 in application.

Nerlens Noel,

First of all, thank you for committing to the University of Kentucky. You have the defensive presence of Anthony Davis and an offensive game that is developing quickly. Your ability to alter everyone’s shot benefits every person on your team. Rebounding is a key part of your game, you get the rebound, throw to the outlet, and then we score an easy layup or dunk on the other end. You are truly NBA ready even though I would rather have you stay for next year.

You would be the first overall pick in next year’s draft but unfortunately you are done for this season despite an injury. Since a torn ACL is one of the worst injuries in sports, it takes a while to recover from this injury. It is one of the worst injures for several reasonsOne, it hurts more than any other injury. Secondly, the time to recover is six to eight months after surgery. During and after your recovery, you have to regain your muscles and endurance. But at least it was on a hustle play that you tore your ACL. When I was watching it on TV, it looked so bad that it even hurt me. I wish you best of luck for your surgery and recovery.

I can connect to you in many ways, not really the tearing an ACL part, but other ways. I play basketball too but not nearly at the same level as you. I also have the same dream as you, to play in the NBA. Obviously you will make the pros, but me, I don't think I have a chance. Especially since you are predicted to be in the top 3 overall picks in next years draft.

After looking at roughly five 2013 NBA mock drafts, they project you to now be the 3rd pick after tearing your ACL, even though it is a terrible injury. It really blows when you drop from the 1st to 3rd overall pick, but at least you still achieve your lifelong dream of becoming an NBA basketball player. If you don’t decide to go to the NBA, Kentucky has a pretty good chance of getting deep in the NCAA tournament, even though they aren't a very good team. I really hope you stay in Lexington for another year but I wouldn't argue if you went to the NBA. Best of luck with the surgery and Thank you for the outstanding year with year despite the injury.

Thanks,
                  Kevin Dethloff

Tebow Time

Author’s Note: I am writing this piece for a point of view essay. I am comparing the point of views of Tim Tebow based on a throw he made to win a playoff game. I am focusing on A/B transitions and sentence fluency.

Surviving Horrors

Author’s Note: I am writing this piece in response to the book Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen. I am focusing on A/B transitions and my sentence fluency.

His mouth opened, he called, started to aim his musket at Samuel at the same instant that Samuel raised his rifle, cocking the hammer.”(Page 155) This quote happens late in the book but it really sets the scene for the entire book, Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen. Samuel, the main character, almost dies for the 3rd time in the book in this scene. As you can tell, survival was the most important thing during the time of this book. The theme of this novel is survival.

Survival was key during the time of the American Revolutionary War in the book Woods Runner. Samuel took a blow to the head with a tomahawk from two Indians and nearly died. “The tomahawk was coming at his head and he tried to duck, but the white-hot pain exploded as the side of the tomahawk smashed into his forehead.”(Page 55) Since Cooper, an American traveling to the only free state left of Pennsylvania, picked up Samuel on the way there, Samuel was lucky to survive. Cooper took care of him like he was his only son. If I was Samuel during this time, I wouldn’t be able to thank Cooper enough. Not even as much as when Katniss volunteered tribute for her little sister in The Hunger Games.

Woods Runner and The Hunger Games share the same theme as each other. In the book Woods Runner, Samuel is struggling to survive against the British Redcoats. Katniss, from The Hunger Games, was also trying to stay alive but against other humans fighting for their life too.  Both of the main characters shared the same goal. Their goal, to stay alive but, for Samuel he had to find his parents and rescue them. Additionally, the pair of books each had some heart-pounding action. In Woods Runner, the action occurred throughout the whole book. Whether it was when he found his town in ashes, or when Samuel acquired a nasty wound from a surprise attack with two Indians. Both of these books have similar themes.

In conclusion, the theme is clearly survival in the novel Woods Runner . If it was in the beginning of the book or the end, I could always find a quote to back up the main theme. At the end of the book, everybody almost lives happily ever after. Samuel’s parents will never forget their journey to New York and the horrors that occurred. Samuel won’t forget anything either. Samuel and his family were lucky to survive this incident.
