Author's Note- I am writing this piece because we have to respond to a novel that we are reading right now. In this piece I am focusing on my intro and using A, B transitions between the paragraphs.
"A naked body is lying in the middle of the kraal. The man's wrists are tied to pegs in the ground. His ankles are tied to the end of a log that stretches his legs wide apart. There is a sack on his head. The man doesn't move. I think he must be dead." (23) This is a scene from the book Now Is The Time For Running by Michael Williams. Now Is The Time For Running is an action along with a fiction novel. While Deo, the main character, and Innocent, Deo's brother, are struggling to live, it is a trouble-free prediction that they will live because all stories end well.
While Deo and Innocent are brothers, Innocent is older yet Deo is more mature. When Innocent gets bored, he needs something to entertain himself and that is usually his radio. If his radio's batteries die, he becomes depressed and cries a lot. Deo has learned that he always needs to bring a back up set of batteries with him at all times. Deo is also more mature than Innocent because Deo was the one that saved Innocent when a few people in his family were dying. Deo will most likely be the hero of the book because he has been leading everyone to possible rescue. Deo must find a way to rescue everyone otherwise he might end up on the ground not breathing like a few people in his family already are.
Towards the beginning of the book, there has already been a little war. This is a scene during the fight."I crawl forward into the noise of people dying. The soldiers are shooting. People are running away. Some are falling. Now the soldiers hold their guns as if they mean business. Their guns bark, come alive in their hand, their bullets rip into the earth, the walls, trees, pots, chairs, and flesh. I watch. I am too afraid to turn away. People scream; their cries are cut in half by bullets. In the noise and panic, I cannot see Amai. I cannot see Grandpa Longdrop."(27). Grandpa Longdrop and Amai both died after trying to stand up for their town and family. This has been the biggest event in the story.
Even though Deo and Innocent are on the verge of dying if they get caught by the soldiers, the book will most likely end well and they won't die. What do you think is the theme of this book?
